Why I Built PTKit: Personal Training Software is Broken

February 04, 2026
This is the reason I started PT-kit, a simple and affordable solution for Personal Trainers.

This is a fantastic founding story, Danny. It’s relatable because it’s born out of genuine frustration. In the SEO world, "Founder stories" perform well because they hit E-E-A-T (Experience and Expertise) perfectly.

I’ve structured this to be clean and punchy, using H2 and H3 tags to help Google index the "Affordable" and "Simple" keywords you want to rank for.

Why I Built PT-Kit: Personal Training Software is Broken
My name is Danny, and I’m the founder and developer of PT-Kit. Ever since high school, I dreamed of building a small, profitable business that I could manage and grow on my own terms. But PT-Kit didn't start as a business plan. It started because I was a personal trainer and I was tired of the tools we were forced to use.

The Problem With Google Sheets
When I was training, we used Google Drive for client management. To be honest, it was embarrassing. Asking a client to open up a clunky Google Sheet to log their habits felt completely unprofessional. Most of my clients spent all day looking at Excel for their corporate jobs, and then I was asking them to do the same thing for their fitness. It lacked the polish that a professional trainer should provide.

Why Trainerize Didn't Solve It
Eventually, my gym adopted Trainerize, and it was a total headache. It was easily the most complicated and annoying product I had ever used. I immediately understood why so many trainers preferred spreadsheets over "pro" software.

Building workouts was a chore, creating custom exercises was difficult, and rearranging a client's week was a massive hassle. On top of that, it forced clients through a long onboarding process of questionnaires and app downloads that created nothing but friction. The gym was paying a lot of money for a tool that actually slowed us down.

Building a Simple and Affordable Alternative
After I moved on from that gym, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I taught myself Ruby on Rails and started building the solution I wish I’d had.

I built PT-Kit with two guiding principles: Simplicity and Affordability.

I wanted a tool where you could build a workout in seconds, not minutes. I wanted a platform that looked professional for the client but felt effortless for the trainer. Most importantly, I wanted to keep it affordable so that trainers just starting out didn't have to choose between professional software and their profit margins.

The Birth of PT-Kit
Today, PT-Kit is live and helping trainers manage their clients without the technical headache. Seeing my first users actually enjoy the product has been the highlight of my career.

If you are looking for a simple personal training app that stays out of your way and lets you focus on coaching, I’d love for you to try PT-Kit. No corporate spreadsheets, no bloated software, just a better way to manage your fitness business.
